Healthy Fruit Drinks


Fruit drinks are one way to increase your total consumption of fruits throughout the day. Eating a diet that includes fruit drinks may boost your immunity and help prevent illness. Choosing a fruit drink that is made of 100 percent juice will ensure you are getting the maximum benefit from your beverage choice. According to Jay Kordich, author of "The Juiceman's Power of Juicing," fruit juices should be part of a healthy diet because they provide vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Orange Juice

Orange juice provides vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health. Kordich notes that orange juice is high in vitamin C, a vitamin that helps protect your white blood cells so they are able to fight off germs. Orange juice can also provide some protection against heart disease, heart attacks and strokes. One serving of pure orange juice provides about one-fifth of your daily potassium needs. Potassium is necessary for a regular heart beat. Kordich adds that regular consumption of orange juice may protect your blood vessels and capillaries, which can protect you from bruising. Look for a carton of orange juice that supplies vitamin C and that is labeled as 100 percent juice or juice five or six oranges to make about 1 pt. of fresh juice.

Apple Juice

Apples may reduce your cholesterol levels and protect the health of your heart, reports Kordich. Apples are also a good source of pectin, a substance that can rid your body of toxins as well as promote proper function of your digestive system. The phosphorus in apple juice also aids your kidneys in getting rid of waste. Apple juice is a good source of vitamins and minerals that help you achieve good health as well. Look for 100 percent apple juice that is not clear, suggests Kordich. Clear apple juice has fewer nutrients than opaque apple juice because many vitamins and minerals are stripped away to create a clear liquid.

Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice has several health benefits, reports Ann Louise Gittleman, author of "The Fat Flush Foods." Cranberries contain flavonoids that help reduce the bad cholesterol in your body, which can lower your risk of cardiovascular problems and heart disease. Cranberry juice may also treat and prevent urinary tract infections and bladder infections by preventing the germs that cause these infections from sticking to the walls of your bladder and urinary tract, adds Gittleman. Drinking cranberry juice regularly may also help prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease by preventing germs from sticking to the surfaces in your mouth. Look for 100 percent cranberry juice and drink a glass each day to get these benefits.
